We depart from our pick-up points this morning and make our way north, passing along the very bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, as well as through the splendid Highland scenery of the Trossachs. We arrive in time for lunch at Oban, a picturesque west-coast town known as the gateway to the Hebridean Islands. Having lined our stomachs it’s time for our first whisky tasting of the trip, as we enjoy a tour of Oban Distillery, one of the oldest producers of single malt scotch in the world. Our highlight here is most certainly Oban’s 14-year old blend, traditionally served with a piece of crystallised ginger.
After a restful night in our harbourside hotel, we begin today with a ferry ride to Mull, keeping our eyes peeled for whales, dolphins and porpoises on the way. Upon arrival we enjoy a private visit and tastings at the Tobermory Distillery, which was established back in 1798. Following lunch we board a ferry to the mainland via Kilchoan, Britain’s most westerly village. From here it’s a short ride to the Ardnamurchan and Adelphi Distilleries, where we enjoy our second round of tastings for the day. Our journey continues via the Corran Ferry, and leads to Fort William, our base for the next two nights.
Let the fresh air and cool breezes restore you during our glorious morning cruise over Loch Linnhe. This our chance to take a peek at the resident seal population as well as – fingers crossed – some local golden and white-tailed eagles. We also drink in the incredible scenery of Ben Nevis and its surroundings. After lunch at a loch-side seafood restaurant we make a photo stop at the crumbling ruins of Old Inverlochy Castle, before the golden drams of the Ben Nevis Distillery beckon. A tasting in the shadow of Great Britain’s highest mountain crowns the day.
It’s over the sea to Skye this morning, as the ferry carries us across to Mallaig, on the island’s southern shores. The journey alone is worth the trip, but the treats don’t stop there: instead our coach continues north, rewarding us with a visit to the Talisker Distillery in the gorgeous rural village of Carbost. Lunch brings us to the well-stocked Seumas Bar, with its collection of over 400 malts – you won’t be surprised to learn that this has been the winner of “Whisky Bar of the Year” for four years running!
Our final stop today is Gaelic Whiskies, an independent company bursting with non-chill-filtered flavour…
Today we cross the Skye Bridge, beginning our scenic journey back to Central Scotland. But first we stop at Eilean Donan Castle, a romantic 13th-century pile on the shores of the Kyle of Lochalsh. This island spot is a true Scottish icon, situated at the majestic meeting point of three sea lochs. We resume our drive through the Highlands, pausing for a visit to Edradour, one of the country’s smallest distilleries, with over 25 varieties of single malt scotch to tempt us.
Our day ends in bustling Perth, where we enjoy a jovial farewell supper with the group.
It may already be our final day, but there’s still time for one last tour and tasting. Get set for the Tullibardine Distillery, an independent, family-run haven of handcrafted single malts. Distilling, maturation and bottling are all done on site, making Tullibardine somewhat of a rarity in today’s whisky industry.
We sip down the last drops of nectar, break for lunch, and prepare to say our goodbyes. This afternoon we return to our pick-up points, and head home.
