If you like Austria or Switzerland, you’ll love Slovenia. Virtually landlocked but wedged between Italy and Croatia with just a toe on the beach at the top of the Adriatic, this is a soaring Alpine country with a sub–Mediterranean climate on the plains, sparsely–populated, with deep unspoilt forest covering over half the country and criss–crossed with extensive lakes and rivers as well as karst formations and cave systems. Slovenia has more protected areas than any other EU state, and is the third most forested country in Europe after Finland and Sweden. With huge areas of pristine natural habitats, and water quality among the highest in Europe, the country is home to wild boar, chamois, Alpine ibex, roe deer, wolves, bears, fox and lynx, to say nothing of owls, hawks, eagles and woodpeckers. Among plant species you may find primula, edelweiss, snake’s head fritillary, daphne, gentiana and cypripedium, the lady’s slipper orchid.
It’s an up–and–coming ‘foodie paradise’ too, with award–winning hams, cheeses, olive oils, wines, and Ljubljana eateries featuring among the San Pellegrino World’s 100 Best Restaurants.
On this tour we’re heading to the town of Bled, on the banks of Lake Bled in the Julian Alps of northwestern Slovenia. Lake Bled is not especially big by our Lake District standards, but it’s beautifully set among mountains and forests and there is an island in the middle with its own church, and lots of local environmentally–friendly pletna rowboat ferries. Dominating the lake is a high rocky outcrop on which stands the oldest castle in Slovenia, which also has a medieval tower, courtyards, a restaurant, a drawbridge, a chapel and a moat. In Soviet days, Marshall Tito had a villa here.

Meet up at your chosen airport for your flight to Venice, where on arrival we join the coach for the journey to Slovenia. The route takes about 3 hours (with comfort stops) and takes us through some spectacular Alpine scenery. We arrive at the 4 star Hotel Park or the 4 star Hotel Golf, Bled for check in and free time before dinner and the first of seven nights stay.
Breakfast and a Welcome Meeting, then a 4–hour walking tour of Bled villages Mlino, Seo and Ribno (bring walking shoes).
We depart for the Lipica stud farm, founded in 1580, to see the home of the Lipizzaner white horses, where you’ll have a carriage ridge, a tour of the stables and a chance to see the horses perform. A great day out for all things horsey, even if you don’t know a snaffle bit from a shabrack or a cavesson from a crupper.
Today we trail the river Soča by train, boat and coach to visit Slovenia’s largest wine cellar, with lunch, guide and wine–tasting.
Day at leisure to relax by the pool, explore the town or the castle (entry approx €10), or take a bus to the capital Ljubljana.
