The beautiful crescent–shaped country of Croatia, with almost 6000 kilometres of coastline including thousands of islands, is a relative newcomer to the list of popular tourist destinations for British holidaymakers. Along the southernmost part of its shores is the picturesque area known as the Dubrovnik Riviera. This gentle, rocky coast abounds with natural bays, and the hinterland is scented with a mixture of pine and olive groves, vineyards and Mediterranean undergrowth which fills the air with its distinct fragrance. Without doubt the jewel of this Riviera’s crown is the magnificent old walled city of Dubrovnik itself; steeped in historical, architectural and artistic treasures and boasting spectacular Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains within its pedestrianised, cobbled lanes.
