Festive fun in Scotland’s sparkling capital, and shopping in Glasgow too…
The streets and gardens of Edinburgh blaze with festive cheer at Christmas as the city plays host to ever–expanding Christmas Markets as well as an ice rink and fairground rides in Princes Street Gardens, and of course the big–name shops and department stores on Princes Street itself have enduring appeal.
The European Christmas Market is one of the centre–pieces of the Edinburgh festive season. Situated on the Mound Precinct and the surrounding area, and close to the National Gallery of Scotland, it is a continental feast for the eyes with illuminated wooden cabins laden with hand–blown baubles, toys, crafts, glassware and candles. The German vendors also sell a tempting selection of sausages, dumplings, liver pate, puddings and breads, as well as the inevitable glühwein, so make sure you have a little spare room around your waistband before you go! If your tastes are more traditional, visit the Scottish Market in St Andrew’s Square (on the far side of Princes Street) where you will find a winter showcase of the very finest artisan Scottish food and drink. For those with families, there is a Children’s Market with child–friendly activities and stallholders selling products designed to appeal to younger visitors.
